Why has no one ever told me about tongue ties?

For years, research and education for the medical community has been lacking. Recently, in 2004, the posterior tie was first described. Since then, there has been quite a bit of research on tethered oral tissues. However, unfortunately medical professionals are still taught off old, outdated information. Even in dental school, the education on tongue ties is insufficient. Physicians, dentists, speech and feeding therapists, and lactation consultants all need to do their own additional training and education in order to be aware of and understand tongue and lip ties. Dr. Bachelder has spent countless hours reading, learning, and training on TOT’s in order to be able to provide her patients with the best care.
