Who has TOTs?
Tongue and lip ties are very common, and can sometimes cause a significant functional limitation in your infant, child, or yourself (adults). The most current research states that tongue ties are as common as 1 in 5 people.
If you can answer yes to having some of the below symptoms, it may be worth your while to be evaluated for a tie:
Babies:
- Shallow or poor latch
- Noisy eating (clicking, smacking noises)
- ‘Messy’ eating (milk spills out of mouth)
- Slow or poor weight gain
- Spit up, reflux
- A lot of gas, colic
- Baby falls off nipple often
- Nursing for an excessive amount of time, or extremely often
Symptoms in Mom:Â
- Painful nursing
- Damaged nipples: Creased, flattened, blanched, blistered, or cut nipples
- plugged ducts
- Poor breast drainage
Children:Â
- Speech issues, issues with sounds, and/or syllables
- Hard to understand, communication is frustrating
- Speech delay
- Slow and or picky eater
- Packing food in cheeks
- Snores, sleeps in funny positions, seems restless while sleeping
- Grinds teeth at night
- Headaches and neck pain
Adults:Â
- Snores
- Mouth breathing
- TMD
- Grinds teeth
- Headaches and neck pain
- Intimacy issues
- Speech issues (stuttering, speech impediment, trouble speaking fast)
